Mostafa Derkaoui was born in Oujda (Morocco) in 1944. He studied film at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques in Paris, then at the Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Filmowa i Teatralna in Łódź. He made several short films, among them Les Quatre Murs (1964) and Amghar (1968) before directing About Some Meaningless Events (1974), his first feature- length film. He contributed to the collective films Cinders of the Vineyard (1975) and The Gulf War… What Next? (1992), and has also made Les Beaux Jours de Chahrazade (1982), Je(u) au passé and Les Sept Portes de la nuit (both 1994), Casablanca de nuit (2003), and Casablanca de jour (2004), among other works.
