MOROCCAN PANORAMA

Synopsis

The epithet “happy home” could not be more ironic than it is in The Women of Block J, which takes place in the women’s ward of a Casablanca psychiatric hospital. While it steers clear of the dark brooding of its thematic cousin One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Mohamed Nadif’s sure-footed second feature shares with its predecessor a deep sense of compassion for its protagonists, whose heartbreaking feelings of abandonment and failure are emotively captured by a wonderful cast. Through nocturnal escapes into the city orchestrated by a sympathetic nurse, three inmates find camaraderie in a makeshift sorority that helps them develop the strength to overcome their psychic wounds and rediscover freedom, joy, and their precious hopes for the future.
