Synopsis

Frank Sheeran was taught how to kill in World War II. He later made his skills available to the Mafia, becoming a favourite of notorious union boss Jimmy Hoffa. Sheeran’s story spans decades, but culminates in the days preceding Hoffa’s mysterious disappearance. From the perspective of that event in July of 1975, Martin Scorsese’s latest masterly epic unfolds the gloomy career of a man without a conscience. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and – for the first time in a Scorsese film – Al Pacino no longer play the self-absorbed, glamorous gangsters of Goodfellas or Casino; The Irishman injects a motif of futility, senselessness, and transience. Wielding violence delivers intoxicating feelings of power, but it’s a game in which there are only losers.
