ITALIE

Synopsis

Her pregnancy well advancing, Lena comes to Italy from Poland to give birth to a baby she will sell to Ermanno’s uncle and his wife. Ermanno is being paid to claim he is the father of the fetus – there being less red tape to adopting the offspring of a relative. For now, however, his task is to care for Lena, which he goes about with an air that lies somewhere between cynicism and insolence. Meanwhile, Lena’s lack of interest in her unborn child borders on nonchalance. Director Carlo Sironi’s restrained atmosphere coupled with nuanced performances from its lead actors give Sole a solid centre of gravity as this temporary, sham parenthood takes on an emotional dimension that resembles the real thing.
