Synopsis

On New Year’s Eve, 2010, in a luxury resort on the Egyptian shore of the Red Sea, some extremely privileged families have gathered to celebrate the annual milestone, while their service personnel busy themselves in anticipation. Sakr’s first feature, an ensemble melodrama punctuated by comic situations, offers a rare lens into the microcosm of the Egyptian upper classes in an uninhibited moment of carousal, starkly contrasted with their interactions with the working class they employ. Intertwining stories of love and sexual entanglements, conservatism and decadence, in which a wisecracking drug dealer drives around in an ambulance to deliver recreational libations, a masseur delivers more than muscular relief, and an ostracised divorcée finally earns her brother’s empathy, Ras El Sana is both once entertaining and insightful, and breaks several taboos.
