AFRIQUE DU SUD

Synopsis

In 1981, Nicolas, an eighteen-year old conscript in the South African army, undergoes brutal physical training and white supremacist indoctrination to defend the Apartheid regime from communism and the “black danger” that is threatening to breach the Angolan border. When he is drawn to a fellow soldier, he faces the additional danger of being sent to Ward 22, where gay men face psychological destruction. Moffie – a derogatory Afrikaans term for “gay” used for shaming and denouncing crimes – is inspired by André-Carl van der Merwe’s novel, itself based on his diaries. Oliver Hermanus’ direction of non-professional actors is adroit in this striking coming-of-age drama, in which emotion, cinematography, and music are laced together with masterful precision.
