Director, Netherlands

“If we were aware of all the decisions you take when you make a film, then it would no longer really be an art. It would purely be an intellectual game. The way I work is much more organic.”

“We make films to communicate, to touch an audience, not to mistreat them. Nonetheless, let’s say I don’t mind upsetting people!”

“I think I’ll have to do something that makes people hate me again!”

Born in 1938 in Amsterdam, Paul Verhoeven has produced an eclectic body of work, made on both sides of the Atlantic. Subversive yet popular, Verhoeven enjoys applying pressure just where it hurts. From Robocop to Elle, a journey that takes in Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Starship Troopers and Black Book, the Dutch filmmaker has confirmed his status as a major artist through a filmography that is both explosive and revered by his many fans.
