Born in 1960, he grew up and studied Fine Arts in Cape Town (South Africa). At the same time he joined a collective that ran the cult nightclub Scratch. This meeting place successfully beat apartheid segregation laws and nurtured a generation of creative and militant youth. Life, Above All is nominated for 2010 Best Foreign Film Academy Award. He has made five movies for cinema – two of which, Mapantsula and Paris I Love You, have screened in Un Certain Regard at Cannes –as well as directed TV series. He now lives in Berlin.
