Born in Cairo (Egypt), he graduated from the High Institute of Cinema in 1999, and worked as an assistant director to many prolific directors. He directed two short films and several documentaries, and became popular with the 40-minute film Lilly. The Yacoubian Building was the gateway to his success and was screened in several film festivals such as Berlin and Tribeca in 2006, where it won Best New Narrative Filmmaker. After Ibrahim Labyad, he took part in 18 Days, a collection of 10 shorts screened at Cannes. In 2007, he co-founded the production company Lighthouse Films .
