MIFF-Short film competition:Dalto by Essam Doukhou wins first prize

Dalto, the short film by Essam Doukhou, won the “Cinécoles” prize awarded by the Jury chaired by Abderrahmane Sissako. Doukho’s film tells the story of Adam, a young, lonely and creative, twenty-year-old student, who wants to learn graphic design. At his interview he discovers that he is colourblind , which causes him to rethink his life. The film is directed using rapid shots and snappy cuts.

In awarding first prize, the Jury’s chairman Abderrahmane Sissako, Mauritanian director of the film “Timbuktu” which was nominated at the Cannes Film Festival, paid tribute to HM King Mohammed VI and to HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, president of the Marrakech Festival Foundation. He also expressed his admiration for the young Moroccan filmmakers’ films shown at this year’s “Cinécoles” competition, considering that the increase in the number of film schools is likely to enrich the course and development of Moroccan cinema.

Ten films were nominated for the “Cinécoles” prize: 1920 (Yassine Gaamer, Ihb Art Media - Casablanca), Dolls (Mohamed Oudghiri, Faculty of Arts - Marrakech), En dehors de la ville (Rim Mejdi, ESAV - Marrakech), Abulari (Dalal Tantaoui Al-Araqui, IMAJ - Casablanca), Goodbye Cinema (Madane El Ghazouani, Ihb Art Media - Casablanca), Layla (Ahmed Messoudi, ESAV - Marrakech), Shoes (Meryem Benheddi, Faculty of Arts - Tétouan),  Le souffle de la vie (Driss Tabaa, Faculty of Arts - Tétouan), Think Before You Click (Ayoub Ziane, Studio M - Casablanca) and finally Dalto (Essam Doukhou, Multidisciplinary Faculty - Ouarzazate), this year’s winning film.

The Jury, chaired by Abderrahmane Sissako, comprised Zoe Cassavetes (USA), Ana Girardot (France), Driss Roukhe (Morocco), Elisa Sednaoui (France, Italy, Egypt) and Gaspard Ulliel (France).

The “Cinécoles” prize awards the winner a grant of 300,000 dirhams, graciously donated by the President of the Marrakech Festival Foundation, HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, to finance a second project under the right conditions, including professional technical assistance.
