TUNISIE

Synopsis

A wild and engrossing reverie, replete with a bunker buried in a forest, a giant anaconda, a black wall that appears out of the blue, magical ocular surtitles, and a man who breastfeeds, Tlamess (“hex” in Arabic) reels in a strange, singular, and immersive cinematic experience, inviting a rare meditation on the fundaments of contemporary existence that is ever so nigh to the cataclysmic: our relationship to Nature, to love, to communion, to procreation. As director Ala Eddine Slim audaciously laces together evocations of primeval myths, the mystery becomes at once familiar and inscrutable. With remarkable cinematography and an evocative soundscape, Tlamess, like an epic poem, cannot be explained nor deciphered, but is rather a beguiling solicitation to wanderlust in the imaginary orb of cinema.
