Synopsis

After completing his jail sentence, a thief returns to the spot where he buried his loot, at the foot of a dead tree on a deserted hill, only to find that the nearby villagers have transformed the site into a shrine dedicated to the “unknown saint”. What ensues is a comedy of errors that floats on the absurdity of belief: the villagers have been waiting for rain for decades and they line up for a medicament that cures all ailments; the thief believes he can retrieve his bag of cash; and the “saint” has yet to perform a miracle. Refreshingly uninhibited and caustic, Alaa Eddine Aljem’s first feature treats a subversive subject with intelligence and infectious affection for his characters.
