Synopsis

Having moved from his village in Brazil’s interior to the port city of Manaus some years ago, Justinio spends his work hours among shipping containers and his blandly racist colleagues. Time in the family home – a shack on the outskirts of the city – is far more convivial, though punctuated by friendly jests about the younger generations becoming increasingly “white” in their ways. When his daughter makes the decision to take up studies in faraway Brasília, Justinio is struck with the unexplained ailment that gives the film its title. With The Fever, director Maya Da-Rin provides a surgically precise, calmly furious excoriation of the West’s imposition of its choice-denying systems on indigenous peoples – and imagines a resolution that vibrates with elegance and dignity.
