Saeed, a young cinephile, and Milad, an art student, began documenting their lives in Eastern Ghouta from the outbreak of the civilian insurgency in 2011, and continue recording images until their departure in 2015. The resulting film, culled from 450 hours of footage, offers a rare, up-close and personal chronicle of the devolution of the insurgency into both a civil war and a regional proxy war conducted by international belligerents. The images are troubling, compelling, frightening, hopeful, and despairing all at once. Can cameras save lives? Perhaps not, but they can record our humanity, in the glory of its courage and righteousness, and the horror of its cruelty and violence. Still Recording challenges thresholds in the practice of war documentation.
