Synopsis

In 1987, eight-year old Yael spends a lot of time by herself. Her father is employed abroad, and her mother is always working or fatigued, so the girl has imposed a routine to structure her solitary afternoons, which includes the “mad minute” of maths; listening to her father’s voice on cassette tapes; and cooking “dinners” with a toy oven. Yael is ordering her world on a scale she can comprehend, while outside, the Philippines is emerging from a two-decade-long dictatorship, and the adult dynamics at home are becoming increasingly difficult to decipher. Relying on magical realism among other devices, Nervous Translation is brilliantly edited to emphasise the fragmentary nature of memory as it conveys a period of change through the eyes of a child.
