Mamadou Dia

SÉNÉGAL

Synopsis

Nafi’s Father is a carefully composed cautionary tale that skilfully weaves the story of a dramatic feud between two brothers together with that of a foreign, fundamentalist, and bellicose strain of Islam that threatens to overwhelm a modest Senegalese village. The titular patriarch is Tierno, the village imam, a moderate, traditionalist cleric, who stalls his daughter’s impending betrothal to the son of Ousmane, his elder brother. Ousmane, meanwhile, has recently returned home with a small fortune, and Tierno attempts in parallel to thwart his brother’s ambitions of taking over the village and subjugating it to the
imperium of a dangerous emir. Elegantly shot in his narrative hometown, Mamadou Dia’s praiseworthy first feature is engrossing, urgent cinema that is at once local and universal.
