Synopsis

Fourteen-year-old Ying is pregnant. In identifying a schoolteacher as the culprit, she sets in motion a male-operated mechanism of investigation, denial, and defence, conducted by her perennially absent father, the by-the-book police force, an investigative journalist, and indignant school authorities. In all their probing, sparring, and posturing – often based more on opinion than on evidence – these various, overlapping coteries of men seem to lose sight of the girl at the centre of their drama. Ying herself has difficulty with her vision, and director Zhai Yixiang often places his protagonist in the misty fields surrounding her rural home – this motif of a lack of focus providing apt commentary on the understanding of women in a society dominated by men.
