Synopsis

Director RaMell Ross moved to impoverished Hale County, Alabama, to teach photography and coach basketball; in Hale County This Morning, This Evening, he captures moments and moods of the people he encounters there, building up a sense of quotidian rhythm within a landscape, and indeed within the universe at large. African Americans are more often than not observed, presented, and misrepresented through the lens of the specific whiteness of the United States; here, a primarily black community is framed from within, and the resulting film is a meditative, poetic, and organic consideration of a place and its people, focussing on two young men and their dreams for the future.
