Lacking proof of life, yet never declared deceased, the fate of 17,000 persons who disappeared during the lengthy Lebanese Civil War remains in limbo more than 25 years after the war ended. Working with the archive of the association established by the families of the missing, Ghassan Halwani blends various modes of representation, documentation, and incarnation to meditate on the nagging yet elusive presence of these people in the collective consciousness, as well as their absence in public discourse. What happens when the invisible reappears, and after an absence is minted as iconic? Erased, Ascent of the Invisible is a remarkably accomplished, poetic, and dignified elegy to memory, in which animated images and documentary footage are seamlessly and artfully coupled to produce an irresistible yet quiet emotional response.
