Synopsis

In real time, Agnès Varda’s second feature film follows Cléo over the 90 minutes before she receives the results of recent medical tests. Employing conceits including shifting narrative voices, cubist editing, and even an unexpected musical interlude, Varda constructs a story that is at once intimate and vast. As much a document of Left Bank life in the early 1960s – from traipsing through cafés and hat shops to radio reportage about ongoing conflict in Algeria – as it is an emotionally charged portrait of a woman on tenterhooks, Cléo from 5 to 7 remains a revelation nearly six decades after its release.
