In the early 1920s, Georges Laffont decides to travel to Upper Volta in West Africa to forget the atrocities of the First World War. After this trip, Georges returns to Paris with a load of tribal masks and meets his brother Marcel, a veteran who became deaf during the war, and who now lives with their mother. Georges is desperately trying to recover from these traumas and he finds solace with Helen, a sign language teacher.
