THE 11TH CONTINENT

Lee Chang-dong

Corée du Sud

Synopsis

Shortly after Jong-su falls head over heels in love with Hae-mi, she embarks on a lengthy trip to Africa. While she is away, Jong-su takes care of her home, as well as a mysterious – and invisible – cat. Months later, Hae-mi returns home in the company of Ben, a wealthy playboy. The fortunes of these three intertwine, until Hae-mi disappears again, and the sparks of rivalry between Ben and Jong-su ignite, and soon see them playing with fire. Based on a short story by Haruki Murakami, Lee Chang-dong’ impressive psycho-thriller is an enigmatic fable whose initial premise seems harmless – but as the noose tightens around the protagonists, inexplicable events, ambiguities, and unanswered questions make for a simmering atmosphere of suspense.
