THE 11TH CONTINENT

Synopsis

In the mid-1700s, a youngster is abducted from his homeland in north Africa. Taken to the shores of Europe, where he is purchased by a countess who baptises him Angelo, and determines to give him a “proper,” European education – an experiment in leading the noble savage down “the path towards becoming human.” Throughout his life, and despite his underlying resistance, Angelo remains an exotic display; a signifier of the assumed superiority of European whiteness. By placing his fact-based narrative squarely in a time when racism, writ large and devoid of nuance, was the norm, provocative director Markus Schleinzer is able to go beyond examining obvious prejudice to provide an astute exploration of the complexities of cultural assimilation – a psychological burden whose impact reverberates throughout contemporary society.
