Born April 2nd, 1967 in Bombay, India, Ajay Devgan discovered the world of cinema at a very young age thanks to his father Veeru Devgan, an action director and stunt coordinator whose career counts over seventy-five films.
Performing his own stunts for his debut film "Phool Aur Kaante" by Sandesh Kohli at age twenty three, therefore came to him naturally. It earned him the Filmfare Best Debut Award. After a few action films, Devgan switched genres with "Ishq", a romantic comedy directed by Indra Kumar, which would have him co-star with his future wife and well-known actress Kajol Mukherjee.
In 1998, his commanding performance in "Zakhm" by Mahesh Bhatt earned him raving reviews and India's highest cinematographic distinction, the National Film Award for Best Actor. His dominance on-screen in « Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam » by Sanjay Leela Bhansali (1999), "Thakshak" by Govind Nihalani (1999), "Company" by Ram Gopal Varma (2002), "Deewangee" by Anees Bazmee (2002), "Gangaajal" by Prakash Jha (2003), "Yuva" by Mani Ratnam (2004) and "Khakee" by Rajkumar Santoshi (2004) cemented his reputation as a truly versatile actor and made reviewers consider him as a successor to Amitabh Bachchan.
"Raincoat" by Rituparno Ghosh (2004), an intimist film, was another occasion for revealing another aspect of his talent. He went on to win an astonishing second National Film Award for Best Actor in 2003 for "The Legend of Bhagat Singh" by Rajkumar Santoshi. "Omkara" by Vishal Bhardwaj (2006) confirms that Ajay Devgan will leave an everlasting impression on Hindi cinema.
